Chicago Trip 2012 - Day 4, Part 1

Up at 7am this morning.  Had the hotel coffee again, and finally got going at 11am.  We caught the red line CTA train at Chicago and State and took it toward 95th, then got off at Roosevelt and walked to the Shedd Aquarium.

Chicago, a city in progress
The Shedd Aquarium
Walking up this path I was suddenly struck hard in the back of the head.  I had just enough time to recover from the shock and think "what the f__k?!" before spinning around to see a small black object flapping away.  As we were coming out of the aquarium later we saw this sign:

Glad I was wearing a hat
Skyline
We decided to go ahead and get City Passes that would be the best value for the things we wanted to do (and one in hindsight we didn't want to do, which is coming up after the aquarium).

Since it was lunchtime we headed to the food court.  It was a little hard to eat when everything, and I mean everything, smells like fish.  To be most specific, the entire building smelled like the starfish I had to dissect back in junior high.  Anyway...
I had a cheeseburger, onion rings, cherry coke, water and a rice krispie treat.

Our City Pass admissions for the aquarium included tickets to a 4D movie and the indoor aquatic animal show.  It struck me as strange for an aquarium to have sea animals performing tricks Sea World style.  I'm not a huge fan of Sea World by the way - I like aquariums and I like amusement parks, but for some reason I don't like them Frankensteined together.

For the 4D movie we had a choice between Twentieth Century Fox's Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (no), Dora the Explorer: Catch that Robot Butterfly (hell no), and Planet Earth:  From Pole to Pole.  We chose the latter because the Planet Earth series on TV was amazing.  The movie was a 15 minute amalgam of different scenes from the series, accompanied by lights, fans, bubbles, sprays of water, and real snow.  Pretty neat.  After the movie we visited the exhibits but decided to skip the aquatic show.

Quite a few people here for a Tuesday

"Jellies" was the special exhibit currently on display.  Fascinating, but ewww.

The curved, magnifying tanks didn't make for great photos, but they did let you get a good close look at the different jellyfish

Variety

This stairwell was well-themed for some reason to (I guess) represent the abundant amount of sea life one can find in the forest
