New York 2019 - Day 2: Vessel

I so very badly want to type "The Vessel", but it's just "Vessel".

Today we breakfasted in the hotel (included with the room, which we didn't know in advance - a nice surprise).  I like a variety so I had small amounts of scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, Raisin Bran, cantaloupe, honeydew, banana, orange juice, coffee, and a chocolate pastry.

Good morning city
I can see the future, and tonight you'll look like this...
...but for now you're sunny and bright

After breakfast we returned to the room to clean up then headed out at 10:20am to Hudson Yards to experience Vessel, a "meant to be climbed...interactive artwork".  In other words:  a shit-ton of stairs in a beehive/vase configuration.  Entry is free but you must obtain a ticket for timed entry, either online in advance or onsite the day of your visit (first-come, first-served).

We went down to the nearby 7th Avenue subway station, where it was broiling hot, and caught the E train south to the 34th/Penn Station stop.  Our prior trips to New York had been in the fall or early spring, so we weren't used to the heat or the crowds of the summer - prepared for, but not used to.

We exited the subway and walked 2-3 blocks to Hudson Yards and Vessel.  Then we climbed.

Getting ready for an awfully big adventure
Keep your tickets out or up on your phone - they'll be checked twice

The track is for an elevator for disabled persons only.  It is angled and slanted at varying degrees and the elevator constantly adjusts to remain upright.

Here's Todd looking out over The Bloomberg Building, home of The Shed
From their website:  The Shed commissions original works of art, across all disciplines, for all audiences.  We bring together established and emerging artists in fields ranging from hip hop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance.  Our home, The Bloomberg Building - designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Lead Architect, and Rockwell Group, Collaborating Architect - is an unprecedented movable structure that adapts to support ambition and invention in all creative fields.

After we exited Vessel we went inside the Hudson Yards mall to use the facilities then we walked a portion of the High Line, an 1.5 mile elevated linear walkway/garden/art space.  This was a really cool space in the middle of the city and we would come back again before the end of the trip.

We exited the High Line at 23rd and walked down to the Chelsea location for Doughnut Plant, always a must do for us.  I ordered 3 donuts:  rosemary pineapple cake - "Caramelized fresh pineapples and fresh rosemary in the dough and the glaze", vegan banana - "In partnership with Foodkick, we pick up overripe bananas, that are no longer good for sale but perfect for baking, and use them to make of Vegan Banana doughnuts", and a Manhattan cream doughseed - a "mini, round filled doughnut... dipped in Valrhona chocolate and filled with vanilla bean cream".

We ate one donut each at the store and I had the rosemary pineapple.  It can't even describe how good it was!  We took our remaining donuts and walked from 23rd back to our hotel on 54th.  We got there around 2:15pm and heated our leftovers from Ruth's Chris in the microwave (still delicious!).  Having lost all self-control at the taste of the rosemary pineapple donut, I ate my other two donuts for dessert, and they were too good for words.

The aftermath
Nicely designed box

After our late lunch it was time for a shower then relaxing in the room.  There was a brief rainstorm then we got back out at 6pm.  We walked to the Nintendo Store, walked through the underground shopping gallery at 30 Rock, then to a Food Emporium - a grocery near our hotel.  We got a turkey wrap and quiche Lorraine to split and were back in the room by 8pm.  While we ate we watched a cute documentary on PBS about squirrels (pledge drive week), then Bob's Burgers before turning in for the night.

Rain approaching
